Former Mount Pleasant daycare worker faces more charges

Kelli Walker, 36, of Deerwood Lane in Huger is accused of abusing children at a Mount Pleasant daycare center.

A woman accused of mistreating children at a Mount Pleasant day care center faces more charges after a mother said the woman forced nacho chips into her child’s mouth until he gagged.

Kelli Walker, 36, of Deerwood Lane in Huger, was arrested Monday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, a felony that could bring up to 10 years in prison. She previously had been charged with cruelty to children, a misdemeanor.

The 5-year-old boy’s mother read a statement at Walker’s bond hearing Monday reminding Magistrate Linda Lombard that this was not the first time Walker has been accused of abusing children under her care.

“This is an obviously an angry individual,” the mother said.

Lombard set Walker’s bail at $50,000 on the unlawful-conduct charge.

Walker worked at The Sunshine House on Long Point Road until she was fired.

She was arrested last month and charged with cruelty to children after being accused of flicking a girl on the forehead until it left a red mark and sliding the girl off her cot while she was napping, causing her to hit her head on the floor.

Walker was on probation at the day care center at the time after being accused of mistreating other children. She was released from jail after the cruelty charge on $2,130 bail.

She faces a more serious charge this time because her actions put the child’s life in danger, according to the arrest affidavit. An assistant teacher witnessed Walker holding the boy’s head back and forcing chips into his mouth until he gagged, according to the affidavit.
