FOLLY BEACH — The shoal-plagued Folly River and Stono Inlet are still trouble for boaters — and the Coast Guard — after recent dredging to renourish the county beach park here.

Channel markers were illegally moved after the dredging finished up last week. A Coast Guard crew put them back, then some 25 boaters grounded over the busy holiday weekend, a marina dockmaster said.

Boaters said they grounded while following the markers. The constantly shifting and shoaling channel might not be where the markers say it should be, maybe because of the recently completed dredging. The illegal positioning might have put the markers in the right place.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident; moving markers is a misdemeanor. The Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers are taking another look at where the markers are positioned.
