FLORENCE, S.C. — Florence County is getting a new courthouse.
Local media outlets reports that state and local officials gathered on Friday to break ground on the new $32 million facility.
The 120,000-square-foot building is being built downtown across from the Florence County Complex.
When Florence County Council approved the project last year officials expressed concern about safety in the existing courthouse. The way the courthouse is set up inmates can sometimes come close to member of the public.
The existing courthouse is more than 40 years old. Some people questioned why a new one was needed and wondered why the old one simply couldn’t be renovated.
