Firefighters respond to East Bay roof fire

Charleston firefighters ascend ladders to the rooftops on East Bay Street near Cumberland Street Monday afternoon.

The City of Charleston Fire Department responded to a fire on East Bay Street that had the street shut down for a while.

According to the department, crews responded to a call of a possible fire shortly before 4:30 p.m.

When they arrived, firefighters extinguished a small blaze on the roof using a fire extinguisher. The building was evacuated as crews operated on scene, according to the department.

The fire reportedly started when workmen were soldering on the roof.
