YORK, S.C. — Authorities say a fire at an animal rescue center in York County has killed 16 dogs.
Investigators told media outlets that barking dogs woke up the owners of Richardson Rescue near York around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. By the time firefighters put out the blaze, an office, storage building and laundry area were destroyed.
About 65 other dogs and cats on the site survived.
Investigators haven’t determined the cause of the fire, but say a space heater was being used in the building that was destroyed.
The owners of Richardson Rescue say a mother beagle and her puppies, several Chihuahuas and two terrier puppies were among the dogs that died in the fire.
They say they also lost all their records and medicine for the animals.
