The Charleston Animal Society will offer fee-waived adoptions from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Sunday at its campus in North Charleston.

The shelter at 2455 Remount Road is overflowing with animals that need homes. More than 800 animals are in the group’s system, and it is looking to place some 300 animals in homes.

Joe Elmore, CEO of Charleston Animal Society, said there are more than 500 kittens and cats receiving care in the Charleston Animal Society system. A record number of kittens this year has pushed the group far over capacity.

Fee-waived adoptions only apply at the shelter.

Dogs also can be adopted from noon to 5:30 p.m. Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at PetSmart stores at 676 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant and 2076 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley.

Cats also can be adopted 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at PetCo on 975 Savannah Hwy. in West Ashley.

The Charleston Animal Society announced a No Kill Charleston 2015 initiative on April 2, working toward becoming a shelter with no need to euthanize adoptable animals within two years.
