Ex-girlfriend charged with attempted murder in East Side stabbing

Shantasia Lemon

A man is in the intensive care unit at Medical University Hospital after being stabbed Monday night by an ex-girlfriend outside his residence on Charleston's East Side, police reported.

Shantasia Shanay Lemon, 21, is charged with attempted murder stemming from the incident, which occurred about 8:45 p.m. at 9 America St.

The victim, Kyrief Kelly, 26, told police in the emergency room, before being taken to ICU, that he did not know who stabbed him and didn't have any information about what happened, according to a Charleston Police Department report.

About 20 minutes later, however, Kelly's brother, Derrick Kelly, showed up at the ER and told an officer that the suspect told him, "You might want to go to the ER because I just stabbed your brother," the police report states.

He added that Lemon's Facebook page made numerous references to "slicing" his brother. Derrick Kelly told officers that Lemon was a past girlfriend of his brother and stabbed him because he had been hanging out with another woman, according to the report.

Kyrief Kelly was allegedly in the other woman's vehicle when Lemon stabbed him, Derrick Kelly said. He provided police with text messages, which led to Lemon's arrest. Doctors told police that Kelly's wounds were life-threatening, according to the report.

Lemon is currently being held at the Charleston County jail.
