Energy workshops set for Berkeley Co-op customers

  • Updated

Larry and Susan Scott have already fitted the lamps in their Goose Creek home with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights, but now they are looking for other ways to cut their electricity bills.

They can learn additional tips this week when the The Sustainability Institute, in partnership with Berkeley Electric Cooperative, holds three home energy workshops.

“I’m really looking forward to learning ways to cut our electric bill,” said Susan Scott. “It’s almost like a challenge to me.”

The workshops will focus on low-cost and no-cost energy tips and the benefits of the HomeAdvantage program, a low-interest loan program that helps Berkeley Electric Co-op members lower their energy bills. Co-op members who live in Charleston County can receive up to $500 in rebates from the Sustainability Institute’s CharlestonWise program.

Representatives of businesses that specialize in home energy efficiency will also be at the workshops, and homeowners can find out about all of the rebate incentives and tax credits available for making energy efficiency upgrades.

“The Sustainability Institute has been offering these workshops for several years,” said Laura Addis of The Sustainability Institute. “We have never really reached out to Berkeley County homeowners in the past because we have focused on Charleston County, but now we are partnering with Berkeley Electric.”

The nonprofit institute works to help homeowners and business owners conserve energy.

Berkeley Electric, which has about 70,000 members, offers energy audits and energy-saving tips.

“This gives our members interested in lowering their energy bill an opportunity to come talk to us directly and we will tell you what you need to do,” said Eddie Plowden of Berkeley Electric.

The events are free and open to the public.
