It might be another tough year for local shrimp.

The young “spring” shrimp coming out of the estuaries in S.C. Department of Natural Resources trawl nets are fewer and smaller, one of a number of signs suggesting the commercial crop might not be so good again this year. But more shrimp than expected have showed up in commercial clamming nets worked back in the creeks. That’s giving commercial harvesters a little hope.

DNR usually opens the commercial season in May or June.
