Driver killed in wreck on Johns Island

A 24-year-old woman died Tuesday night after crashing into a tree on Johns Island, Charleston County sheriff’s deputies said.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified her as Shequera Barret of Johns Island. She was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene from blunt-force trauma, Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus said.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Division responded around 10:30 p.m. to the wreck on River Road near Roast Duck Lane, according to sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson. Barret lost control of the 2003 Lincoln Town Car she was driving, crashed into an oak tree and was ejected from the vehicle, he said.

Barret was the only person in the vehicle. The wreck remains under investigation.
