Driver killed in wreck near Hollywood in Charleston County

A 63-year-old North Charleston man died early Tuesday in a single-vehicle crash near Hollywood.

Joseph Polite died at 2 a.m., according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Kraus. His cause of death is pending autopsy.

A grey 2008 Ford Explorer was traveling east on S.C. Highway 162 around 1:30 a.m. when the SUV went off the right side of the road and hit a tree, according to Charleston County sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson. The wreck was reported in the 7800 block, which is about a half mile west of S.C. 164.

Polite was wearing a seat belt but suffered fatal injuries, Watson said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
