Driver killed in Berkeley County wreck Monday was from Summerville

The driver of a pickup killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Monday has been identified by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office as a 44-year-old Summerville man.

John Mitchell Jr. was driving a 2006 Ford F-350 truck that collided with an 18-wheeler going in the opposite direction.

The pickup and a 2015 Freightliner collided at 4:50 p.m. on Cainhoy Road near Brick Church Road, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said. The pickup was headed north and the tractor-trailer was headed south when the Ford swerved left and hit it, Beres said.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene, Coroner Bill Salisbury said.

The driver and a passenger in the tractor-trailer were not hurt, Beres said. Both drivers and the passenger were wearing seat belts, he said.
