Driver going wrong way on Highway 17 dies in wreck

A driver going the wrong way on U.S. Highway 17 on Wednesday night died in a wreck, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before midnight, a 2002 Ford Ranger speeding south in the northbound lanes of Highway 17 in the Awendaw area went off the road into a ditch near Reverend Perry Road and flipped several times, Maj. Eric Watson said.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene, Watson said. There was no indication anybody else was in the vehicle or other vehicles were involved.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s identity.
