DMV employee in Ladson accused of embezzling $11,600

A Ladson woman accused of embezzling $11,600 from the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles was arrested Thursday, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

Rebecca Wilkerson Johnson, 53, of Hollytree Circle, is charged with embezzlement of public funds over the amount of $10,000, which carries a fine of up to the same amount and up to 10 years in prison. She was booked in the Berkeley County jail, but online records indicate she is no longer there.

Johnson was a customer service representative at the DMV Ladson office and is accused of taking money that customers used to reinstate their driver’s licenses to pay her personal bills, according to a SLED media release. It is believed to have gone on from Sept. 19, 2014 to Sept. 24, 2015.
