Deputies investigating Saturday vehicle pursuit

Charleston County officials were led on a pursuit Saturday night that ended in the suspect vehicle crashing and four individuals fleeing the scene.

According to Major Eric Watson, the pursuit occurred at 8:30 p.m. when a patrol deputy saw a vehicle speeding on Town Council Road in Hollywood. The suspect's vehicle was also seen allegedly passing another vehicle in a no passing zone.

The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated and fled from the stop, according to Watson. The deputy pursued the vehicle on Highway 165 to the dead end of a road near Metal Trades in Hollywood.

The suspect vehicle crashed into a brick column at the entrance to a residential driveway and four individuals fled from the vehicle, Watson said.

Two suspects were located a short time later and were identified as passengers in the vehicle. One of the suspects that was detained was subsequently charged with Simple Possession of Marijuana. The second individual detained was identified and released without charges. Their names were not released.

The driver of the vehicle was not found and the case remains under investigation. As a standard procedure, the South Carolina Highway Patrol was requested to investigate the crash, Watson said.
