Crews searching St. Johns Yacht Club for missing man

Rescuers and police crews prepare to search around a boat at St. Johns Yacht Club, where 54-year-old Charles Fernell went missing late Wednesday. Fernell lived on a boat and worked at the marina.

County and city rescuers and police officers are searching for a man who is believed to be missing near the St. Johns Yacht Harbor on Maybank Highway.

Charles Dale Fernell, 54, lives on a boat at the marina and works there, prompting divers to search the nearby waters and under vessels docked there this afternoon, authorities said.

Trucks and cars from county sheriff’s and rescue agencies, as well as city authorities, were amassing outside The Stono Breeze restaurant. A Coast Guard helicopter flew overhead. A Coast Guard search of the Stono River early Thursday turned up nothing, officials said.

Fernell was last seen by his son between 10 and 11 p.m. Wednesday.

He is described as white, about 170 pounds and was last seen wearing a longsleeve blue polo shirt with the sleeves rolled up, greenish khaki shorts, and Sperry shoes.

Anyone with information about him can call the Charleston Police Department at 577-7434.
