Crabber pulled out of water after unmanned boat was found circling near Isle of Palms connector

Officials towed this crab boat to a marina after finding it circling under power in the water near Isle of Palms connector Thursday. The fisherman was rescued from the water and taken to a hospital.

After finding an unmanned crabbing boat circling aimlessly in the water Thursday, rescuers began a frantic search for the boat’s skipper, who was presumed to have fallen overboard.

Authorities were summoned to the area about 5:30 p.m. and when they arrived, they saw a boat filled with crab pots circling under power, but no one was aboard, Coast Guard Petty Officer Dylan Skidmore said.

The Coast Guard used netting to the corral the boat and stop it. The boat was towed to the Isle of Palms Marina.

Rescuers with the State Department of Natural Resources and the Charleston County Sheriffs’s Office began looking for the boater and found him in nearby waters, authorities said.

The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Information about his condition was unavailable.
