Coroner identifies West Ashley homicide victim

A 40-year-old Charleston man was killed Wednesday night, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

Richard Williams died on the scene about 5:35 p.m. from a gunshot wound, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal in an email Thursday afternoon.

Charleston police were called to North Avalon Circle about 5:40 p.m. to investigate a shooting. Williams was found lying facedown in a driveway, according to the incident report.

Witnesses told police the man had been shot outside his home on North Avalon Circle. The area is off Orange Grove Road near Ashley Hall Road.

A suspect in the killing has not been identified.

Williams is the fourth homicide victim this year in the city of Charleston and the 22nd in the tri-county area.

During the investigation into the homicide, authorities said, a 27-year-old North Charleston man was arrested in an unrelated crime.

Antoine Donnell Alston of Kenwood Drive was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Police seized 21/2 pounds of marijuana, according to the incident report.

His arrest was not connected with the homicide, police spokesman Charles Francis said.
