Coroner identifies man pulled from Ashley Marina

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has identified a possible drowning victim as a 64-year-old man from Myrtle Beach.

Valeriy P. Svichtcher’s cause of death is still pending, however, according to Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay.

About 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, Charleston officers saw a man performing CPR on Svichtcher, who was just pulled out of the water at the Ashley Marina, police spokesman Charles Francis said. He was pronounced dead at Roper Hospital.

Svichtcher had been staying aboard a boat for the night with his son and several friends, according to an incident report. His friends reported seeing him awake and smoking a cigarette around midnight, and most of the group went to sleep shortly afterward.

Svichtcher’s son returned to the boat around 2 a.m. and noticed that his father was missing, the report said.

Everyone on the boat began to search the docks and found him unresponsive in the water, according to the report. At least one person performed CPR until authorities arrived, but attempts to save his life failed.

The investigation is ongoing.
