Converse College president stepping down this year

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The president of Converse College in Spartanburg is stepping down at the end of the school year.

The school said that Betsy Fleming told faculty, staff and students Tuesday. Fleming has been president 11 years.

She is the college’s ninth president. The school added academic programs during her tenure. It also moved to full NCAA Division II membership for the school’s 11 sports programs.

She also raised more than $76 million in support, including $31 million in endowment growth.

Converse has an enrollment of almost 1,400 graduate and undergraduate students.

Fleming said a 43 percent reduction in tuition made Converse a leader in affordability and value.

A search committee will be set up to find Fleming’s replacement. Officials hope to have a replacement by the time Fleming leaves.
