The S.C. Forestry Commission will conduct a controlled burn on Hobcaw Barony today.

The 550-acre burn, at 22 Hobcaw Road north of Georgetown, will reduce the likelihood of wildfires at the 17,500-acre wildlife refuge, Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins said. The burn will also remove thick undergrowth, making travel and feeding easier for wildlife, according to the Forestry Commission.

Controlled burns are conducted as weather conditions permit, Hawkins said.
