Colleton County deputies charge 17-year-old with homicide by child abuse

PROVIDED Takevia Shanell Wilson, 17, of Second Street East, Hampton, is charged by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office with homicide by child abuse in the June 4 death of her infant child.

A 17-year-old girl who was out on bail on a child neglect charge is back behind bars, charged in the death of her infant child.

On June 5, Takevia Shanell Wilson, of Second Street East in Hampton, was charged with child neglect and held at the Colleton County jail in lieu of a $50,000 bail, court records show.

An investigation later revealed that Wilson’s child died from blunt-force trauma to the abdomen, Colleton County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ted Stanfield said. The child also showed signs of asphyxiation, he said.

Wilson was out on bail when deputies arrested her Thursday night and charged her with homicide by child abuse in connection with the death. Wilson was expected to have a bail hearing Friday afternoon, Stanfield said.

On June 4, deputies responded to a home on Cools Dairy Road near the Round-O community concerning an unresponsive infant.

Paramedics were preparing to transport the child to Colleton Medical Center’s emergency room when deputies arrived at the home about 11 a.m., Stanfield said. The child was later pronounced dead, he said.
