Colleton County deputies capture suspect after man wounded in shooting

Joseph Manigault

A man is in custody after shots were fired at a house in Walterboro and the suspects fled and wrecked, according to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 11:45 p.m., Walterboro police officers saw people in a vehicle shooting at a house at 1014 Cairn St. and turned on their lights and siren, Officer Amy Stivender said. The vehicle fled with officers in pursuit and wrecked around U.S. Highway 17 and Green Pond Highway, according the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with dogs spent 10 hours looking for three people who ran from the vehicle, Sgt. Kyle Strickland said. Joseph Manigault, 28, of Walterboro was apprehended in a swamp outside Donnelley Plantation. No charges were immediately announced.

The other two suspects had not been located.

The sheriff’s office is working to see if another nearby shooting was related to this incident, Strickland said.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., a 54-year-old man was shot in the upper left chest in a house at 62 Jared Road, which is just outside the Walterboro town limits, Strickland said. People in the house told deputies they heard gunshots coming from outside. The man was taken by helicopter to Medical University Hospital in Charleston and was in stable condition at last report.
