Charleston City Council Tuesday approved a plan to have the College of Charleston’s Addlestone Library archive former Mayor Joe Riley’s papers.
The plan is contingent on the city providing funding to the college.
If the work is funded, the college also would find ways to make the papers more easily available to the public,
Harlan Greene, the college’s special collections archivist, said the school’s goal is to organize and help provide access to the papers. That could include making some of them available online.
The papers will belong to the city, and they will be stored in city offices in the Gaillard Center at 2 George Street, Greene said. “We just want to build a road to the house the city owns.”
