A dean at the College of Charleston has been named as a finalist in the search for Winthrop University’s next president.

An eight-member committee of university officials has named Alan T. Shao, dean of the College of Charleston’s School of Business, among three finalists in the running to be Winthrop’s next leader. The other two finalists are J. Scott Elwell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Daniel F. Mahony, dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University in Ohio.

Shao joined the College of Charleston as dean of the college’s school of business in 2009. Since that time Shao has expanded the school’s offering of majors, established an MBA degree program and increased the school’s enrollment by 35 percent.

Winthrop’s Board of Trustees fired President Jamie Comstock Williamson last June, saying she violated the Rock Hill college’s nepotism policy by hiring her husband for a community relations position.
