Coleman, Thompson drop out of Republican primary

Two GOP candidates have dropped out of local primary races in Berkeley and Dorchester counties

Two Republican candidates have withdrawn from local races in Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

Berkeley County Republican Tony Coleman has cut short his first run for political office. He was challenging state Sen. Paul Campbell in the Senate District 44 GOP primary but dropped out on Monday, said Elections Director Adam Hammons. Coleman’s name will not appear on the Republican primary ballot June 14.

In Dorchester County, Keith Thompson has notified the election commission that he will not run for the County Council District 4 seat currently held by Larry Hargett, elections executive director Todd Billman said. Because he was Hargett’s only Republican challenger, the races will likely not appear on the primary ballot, Billman said.

Neither Thompson nor Coleman immediately returned a voicemail seeking comment.
