Coast Guard continues to find debris in water; search is on from Folly Beach to Isle of Palms

The search is on after Coast Guard crews reported finding debris Wednesday from a boat on Folly Beach all the way up to Isle of Palms.

Search and Rescue Controller Ron Plante said a Coast Guard helicopter and boat searched the waters and local people were searching the beaches on Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.

The debris — which includes three life jackets, some wood pieces possibly from a boat galley, table and set of stairs — was first reported about 9:20 a.m. between 5th and 7th avenues on Sullivan’s Island. Crews found other scattered debris throughout the day.

The life jackets had some growth on them but not enough to indicate they had been in the water for a long time. There has not yet been anything to indicate where the debris is coming from.

Plante said all the pieces found appear to be uniform, or from the same boat. He added that there hasn’t been any reports of distressed or overdue boaters, but that as long debris continues to be found, crews will continue to search.
