Coast Guard chopper helps rescue kayakers in SC

A helicopter like the one shown in this file photo from the Coast Guard's Air Station Savannah was deployed to rescue kayakers clinging to an overturned kayak off the South Carolina coast Wednesday evening.

BEAUFORT, S.C. - A man and his daughter are safe after they were rescued from their partially submerged kayak in St. Helena Sound near Beaufort.

The Coast Guard says a helicopter from Savannah, Georgia, was sent to search for the 40-year-old man and his 12-year old daughter Wednesday evening. Local emergency officials received a distress call from another kayaker that the pair's kayak was taking on water.

The chopper was able to locate the pair and direct officers from the Beaufort Marine Rescue Service to the site where the two were rescued. Authorities say they were clinging to the kayak. Only the girl was wearing a life jacket.
