Citadel selects Navy Captain Eugene Paluso as new commandant

The Citadel has a new commandant of cadets.

U.S. Navy Captain Eugene Paluso is a 1989 graduate of the state military college. He currently commands Naval Special Warfare Group Three at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In that job he commands 700 Navy SEALS and other personnel.

Paluso is retiring from the Navy after 25 years to take the position at The Citadel this summer. He will oversee the college's 2,300-member Corps of Cadets.

The Citadel's current commandant, retired Marine Col. Leo Mercado, is retiring after serving since in the post since 2009.
