Citadel honors death of mascot bulldog General

One of The Citadel’s mascot bulldogs died Thursday night and will be honored during this weekend’s games.

General, who was active from 2003 to 2013, was 11 years old.

“He died in the loving arms of his caretaker who lives with the dogs on campus,” school spokeswoman Kim Keelor said Friday.

A wreath for General was placed on the big bulldog statue at Hagood stadium Friday afternoon. He also will be remembered with a moment of silence during the weekend basketball and baseball games, Keelor said.

General’s ashes will be interred at 11 a.m. March 14 in a new memorial to The Citadel’s past mascots at Johnson Hagood Stadium. That is the day of the Corps Day Weekend’s spring football game and the Beautiful Bulldog Contest.

The school has two active mascots. They participate in athletic events, parades and community service events and help raise money for animal rescue organizations.

General and Boo IX were succeeded by General II, aka G2, and Boo X in a changing-of-the mascots ceremony in November 2013.

The Citadel has a history of its bulldog mascots on Youtube.
