A losing lottery ticket ended up winning a Charleston woman $1 million.
People who didn’t win the South Carolina Education Lottery’s $1,000,000 Fortune game had a chance to enter their tickets in a separate drawing for $1 million. More than 600,000 entries were submitted, lottery spokeswoman Holli Armstrong said.
The winner, who was not identified, was notified by email that her ticket won. She told lottery officials she thought the email was fake until lottery officials called her to confirm it.
There are scammers who try to collect money from fake lottery prizes, Armstrong said. Scammers often ask for money to cover processing fees to claim a bogus prize. Lotteries never ask for money in return for a prize. They also never ask for personal information such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers or Social Security numbers, she said.
