Charleston woman says ex-boyfriend with mask raped her; police make arrest

Dewayne Travis Brown

A Charleston woman told police her ex-boyfriend broke into her apartment with his face covered and raped her, but she identified him after pulling off his mask and he was arrested.

Dewayne Travis Brown, 39, of Adams Run was arrested Sunday night and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and first-degree burglary. He was being held in the Charleston County jail without bail Monday.

The woman said she was asleep in her apartment on Ashton Street about 3 a.m. Saturday when a man put his hand over her mouth and a blanket over her face and started undressing her, according to the arrest affidavit. She told police she was able to pull off the cloth that covered his face during a struggle and recognized Brown. She said she has known Brown since 2011 and broke up with him about five months ago.

Once she recognized him, she told police she was afraid to try to escape because of his past history of abuse, and she was afraid for her life. She said Brown raped her and then stayed with her in bed until about 7 a.m.

Police were sent to the house about 8:20 a.m., according to an incident report. She told them Brown had broken in by picking a lock.

Brown pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal domestic violence in 2001 and was credited with 20 days in jail, according to Charleston County court records.
