Charleston’s Department of Veteran’s Affairs hospital has received a grant to create a “one-stop” assistance site for homeless veterans.

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center will establish what is being termed a Community Resource and Referral Center for homeless vets. The site will be housed in North Charleston

The $528,000 grant will be used to open the center, probably in fall 2013 in the Rivers Avenue area of North Charleston.

The CRRC will offer a range of services including, but not limited to, medical, mental health and psychosocial needs assessment, case management, veterans benefits, job assistance, legal aid, food and showers.

Another key service will be follow-up support.

The site is being done in partnership with Goodwill as well as other support groups.

A press announcement is set for today at 11 a.m. at the hospital on Bee Street in Charleston.
