Grace Collins, a 2013 graduate of Charleston County School of the Arts, was one of six students nationwide to earn a scholarship as part of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

The $1,000 New York Life Award scholarship was awarded to Collins for her personal essay, To Elizabeth. To be considered for the award, teens in grades 7 through 12 submitted more than 6,000 works dealing with bereavement or loss.

More than 1,600 teenagers were honored this year by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for their art and writing. The competition describes itself as the “longest running, most prestigious recognition program” for creative teenagers.

Actress and arts advocate Sarah Jessica Parker, fashion designer Zac Posen, and entertainer Usher spoke at the national awards ceremony.
