The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Charleston Southern University to fund scholarships aimed at getting more nursing students working in community or home-based settings when they graduate.
The grant will fund up to 18 scholarships per year for three years beginning in the fall. Scholarships will be awarded through the university’s College of Nursing to junior and senior nursing students based on financial need. Some of those students will also be eligible for a full room and board scholarship at CSU.
Andreea Meier, dean of the College of Nursing, said the scholarships will help address the shortage of nurses in community and home health care organizations in the state.
Nursing students receiving the scholarship will be required to remain in the state after graduation and work in those settings for a specific amount of time. The College of Nursing will work to set up job placements for scholarship recipients.
