An occupant of a pickup truck that toppled a utility pole Friday morning in West Ashley told police that someone else had been driving, a crash report stated.

The wreck after 1 a.m. on northbound St. Andrews Boulevard at Magnolia Road knocked out electricity to nearby homes and businesses. It did about $50,000 in damage to the utility equipment and $10,000 to the 2011 Ford pickup that had been going about the 40-mph limit, the document estimated.

Power has since been restored to the area, according to S.C. Electric & Gas.

A Mount Pleasant man was listed as the Ford's owner, but he wasn't there when officers from the Charleston Police Department showed up, agency spokesman Charles Francis said.

Investigators were still unsure Friday afternoon about the driver's identity, Francis said.

The only occupant still there told officers that he was a passenger and that the driver ran away after the crash. The man, who was not named in the report, said he didn't know the driver's name, according to the paperwork.
