Charleston police investigating probable drowning at Ashley Marina

Charleston police are investigating a probable drowning at the Ashley Marina early Wednesday, an official said.

At 2:35 a.m., officers saw a man performing CPR on another man who was just pulled out of the water, police spokesman Charles Francis said. The man who was pulled from the water was pronounced dead at Roper Hospital.

The man had been staying aboard a boat for the night with his son and several friends, according to an incident report. The man’s friends reported seeing him awake and smoking a cigarette around midnight, and most of the group went to sleep shortly afterward.

The man’s son returned to the boat around 2 a.m. and noticed that his father was missing, the report said.

Everyone on the boat began to search the docks and found the man unresponsive in the water, according to the report. At least one person performed CPR until authorities arrived, but attempts to save his life failed.

The Charleston County Coroner’s office will release the identity and cause of death.
