Charleston police on Tuesday arrested a Ravenel man whom was wanted in connection with an armed robbery that happened last month.
Police pulled over Ray Donnelle Hayward, 22, in a traffice stop in North Charleston and issued a probation violation warrant , Charleston police Cpl. Fred Bowie said.
U.S. Marshall’s Task Force and North Charleston police helped track down Hayward, whom was sought by Charleston officers concerning a prior armed robbery, Bowie said.
On May 27, a man approached a woman on Parkdale Drive in West Ashley about 1 a.m., Bowie said.
The man placed a gun to the woman’s head and demanded her purse, according to police. The man fled the scene in a dark Jeep.
The suspect man and vehicle were spotted several minutes later at a BP gas station at 106 Main Road, Bowie said. Officers pursued the vehicle and recovered it on Hughes Road, but the driver escaped, he said.
Police determined that the vehicle was stolen out of Ravenel.
Hayward was later identified as the vehicle’s driver, Bowie said. He is charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Bowie said.
Hawyard is being held at the Charleston County jail.
