Charleston police arrest man in North Romney Street shooting

Charleston police have arrested Antonio Kerron Heyward, 20, of Scottwhite Road, Hollywood, in connection with a May 15 robbery and shooting on North Romney Street.

Charleston police have arrested one of two suspects in a robbery and shooting that occurred May 15 on North Romney Street.

Antonio Kerron Heyward, 20, of Scottwhite Road, Hollywood, is charged with armed robbery, assault and battery first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and trespassing, police said.

Heyward is being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center, where he is scheduled to have a bond hearing at 2 p.m. today, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

At about 6 p.m. on May 15, police responded to 136 North Romney St. in reference to a call from a citizen about shots fired in the area. Officers responded to the area but didn’t find a victim of the shooting.

A short time later, however, police were called to Medical University Hospital after a man showed up with several gunshot wounds. Investigators were able to determine that the man was the shooting victim from 136 North Romney St., Francis said.

The investigation revealed that the victim and another man went to North Romney Street to buy drugs, Francis said. They met the two suspects and a disagreement ensued during the transaction. The disagreement led to a fight. That’s when one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot the victim, Francis said.

Police are still in the process of identifying the second suspect. Anyone with information about this incident can call Charleston Police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
