A North Charleston man was arrested after police say he tried to hold up a man at gunpoint in downtown Charleston early Saturday morning.

The victim told police a man pointed a handgun and demanded money as the victim was getting into his car at Society and Meeting streets about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis. The victim said he refused to turn over any money and the gunman got into a car and drove away.

The victim was able to give police a description of the gunman and his car, along with the license-plate number. Police arrested Jaton Lamont Edwards, 21, of Pineforest Drive in North Charleston during a traffic stop near Meeting and Romney Saturday. He was charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He is in custody at the Charleston County Detention Center.
