Charleston police announce summer youth programs

Young people in Charleston will have a lot of activities to keep them busy this summer.

The police department announced four programs Friday. The city’s recreation department is coordinating the events. Other partners, including the fire department, are helping with some of them.

Friday Night Lights includes basketball, football, soccer, tennis, swimming, double dutch, jump castles, art, a music competition and a movie. The events are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and the movie from 8:30 to 10 p.m. The locations are Martin Park on June 12 and July 31, James Island on June 19 and Aug. 14, Harmon Park on June 26 and Aug. 21, Forest Park Playground on July 10 and Aug. 7, Bridgeview Apartments on July 17 and Governor’s Park on Daniel Island on July 24.

The city’s Mobile Recreation Unit will be appearing in neighborhoods from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. throughout the summer. It’s scheduled to be in Harmon Park on Mondays, Bridgeview Apartments on Tuesdays, Robert Mills Manor on Wednesdays and Martin Park on Thursdays.

Jumping Jack Tuesdays will be at Bridgeview Apartments from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays from June 16 through Aug. 11. Activities include relay races, fitness contest, obstacle courses, arts and music. Southern Bridge Wednesday will include similar activities at Robert Mills Manor from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from June 17 through Aug. 12.
