The Coast Guard on Friday will recognize the efforts of two Charleston Pilots crew members in the rescue of four people from a capsized boat.

Captains John Miles and Frank Witunsky will be presented with the Coast Guard’s Meritorious Public Service Award 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Charleston Branch Pilots’ Association, 6 Concord Street in Charleston, a news release said.

On March 30, a Charleston Pilots boat crew and a Coast Guard helicopter responded to a distress call about 12 miles off the Charleston Harbor.

Four people were found clinging to a 28-foot boat that had capsized in 55-degree water.

A Coast Guard search and rescue boat carried the people to shore.

The Meritorious Public Service Award is presented to those who display unusual courage in advancing the Coast Guard’s mission, the news release said.
