Charleston man sentenced to prison after Folly Beach pool stick attack

Michael Metzler

A Charleston man who beat somebody with a pool stick on Folly Beach will spend a year in prison.

Michael Metzler, 32, of Charleston was convicted Friday of second-degree assault and battery, according to the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Judge J.C. Nicholson Jr. sentenced him to three years suspended on the completion of a year in prison and five years probation. He will also have to pay $2,102 in restitution and complete an anger-management program after his release.

On Dec. 8, 2012, Metzler got mad when the victim’s friend starting talking to his girlfriend at a bar, according to the prosecution. Metzler saw the victim walking home later that night, got a pool stick out of his car, and hit him in the head twice with the blunt end, including once while he was already on the ground unconscious. Witnesses said Metzler likely would have hit him again if they had not intervened.

Metzler was originally charged with attempted murder.
