Charleston man, 19, arrested in West Ashley fatal shooting

Thomas DeAngelo Ancrum Jr., 19, of San Miguel Road faces murder and firearms charges in the July 7 shooting of Demeatrius Raynard Smalls on Hazelwood Drive in West Ashley.

A 19-year-old Charleston man was arrested Monday on a murder charge in connection with a shooting death a week earlier in West Ashley.

Thomas DeAngelo Ancrum Jr. of San Miguel Road also faces a firearms charge in the July 7 slaying on Hazelwood Drive in an unincorporated area of Charleston County.

Ancrum was identified through “various tips” as having a hand in the death of Demeatrius Raynard Smalls, 28, of Charleston, according to Maj. Eric Watson of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Smalls was shot in the chest behind a building at 1927 Hazelwood Dr., just after midnight July 7. Friends took him to a hospital, but he later died.

Ancrum was expected to have a bond hearing around 10 a.m. Tuesday.
