Isolated thunderstorms are possible again today after the Lowcountry received heavy rainfall and flash flooding during severe weather Wednesday.

The Charleston area stands a 30 percent chance of rainfall this afternoon into this evening, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters think some thunderstorms could be severe.

Storms are most likely to form between 2 and 3 p.m.

Similarly to Wednesday, when up to 1 foot of water covered some downtown streets, the primary threat will be heavy rainfall. Storms that do form today will move slowly, allowing torrential rain in some locations.

Wednesday’s storm brought only two-tenths of an inch of rain to the Charleston International Airport, where the weather agency’s official observation station is located.

Hail also is a threat today. Trained weather spotters during Wednesday’s system reported quarter-size hail near Boone Hall Plantation, dime-size clumps of ice in downtown areas and hail the size of half-dollars along U.S. Highway 17 near Jacksonboro.

Falling trees also affected traffic Wednesday at River and Maybank roads on Johns Island, on Park Stone Drive in West Ashley and on two roads in Walterboro, according to the weather service.

Otherwise, today will be partly sunny and relatively cool when compared with the recent heat: A high of 88 degrees is anticipated in Charleston.

The continued threat of severe weather will last at least through Friday.
