The Charleston Fire Department has been working a fire on an isolated marsh island near Johns Island all day, but have reported that it is under control.
The island is located along the Stono River near Rushland Landing Road on Johns Island, according to a Wednesday night media release. Fire crews have extinguished as much of the blaze as possible but smoldering fires may continue through the night.
The island is approximately three to four acres in size and is vacant and isolated away from the neighborhood. The fire poses no danger to nearby residents, the release states. Residents of Rushland Landing and Headquarters Plantation are warned that they may see smoke or fire on the island.
If residents are unsure if it is an emergency, they are asked to call 9-1-1 so that the fire department can investigate. Fire personnel will continue to monitor the fire throughout the night and into Thursday morning.
