Charleston County woman scammed out of $4,800

An 82-year-old Charleston County woman was scammed out of $4,800 in cash by con artists claiming they had found a lost bag of money that they were willing to share, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The woman cashed a check at the bank of Walterboro in Ravenel about 10:45 a.m. Thursday when another woman came up and said she had found a bag filled with money. Another man walked up and joined the conversation.

They got the woman to agree to split all the money three ways - but first they had to take her money to make sure all the money was real. As it turned out, the con artists disappeared and the victim was left with nothing.

Investigators call it the pigeon drop scam, Lt. Chris Brokaw said. Anyone who is approached with what looks like a similar scam in Charleston County should walk away and call Detective Miller in the sheriff's criminal investigations division at 554-2475.
