The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a Charleston County jail inmate the day after they were arrested on a shoplifting charge.
While making their rounds about 5 p.m. Wednesday, detention officers found that a middle-age woman had died, sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said. The inmate had been booked into the jail Tuesday on an outstanding bench warrant for shoplifting. Before she was brought to the jail, she was seen at an area hospital for an apparent medical issue, Watson said.
The Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to investigate.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased.
