The Charleston area hit a record high temperature of 98 degrees on Monday, the second record set during a stretch of 10 days with at least 95-degree heat, according to the National Weather Service.

Gauges at the Charleston International Airport surpassed the previous record of 97 degrees from 2011.

The average high for this time of year is 89 degrees.

The area has seen a daily high temperature of at least 95 degrees since June 13. Weather Service instruments have recorded only one other record high, though: 98 degrees on June 15.

Warm air will hang around for Tuesday, when forecasters predicted a high of 95 degrees and heat index values up to 109 degrees. But that shouldn’t threaten the record high for the date, which is 100 degrees set in 1944.

Some thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Tuesday could bring some needed relief to the heat.
