The Charleston Alumni Chapter of South Carolina State University will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday to discuss ways to support the school as it faces increasing financial problems and legislative scrutiny.

Two state House subcommittees have approved a plan that would shutter the state’s only public historically black college for at least three semesters and lay off its faculty, staff, administrators and board. Students with 2.5 GPAs or higher would be transferred to other schools.

The Charleston chapter meeting will be held at the Delta Life Center, 2002 William Kennerty Drive in West Ashley. Alumni are invited to embark on a “New State of Mind” to support S.C. State, chapter President Michael Allen said.

“Today our mission is even more clear as we work to inspire and encourage young minds to become productive citizens of our state and nation,” a meeting announcement said.
